Battery Conductance vs Load Test: Make Conflicting Results Useful
Compare conductance and load-test results using battery identity, test conditions and exact findings. Includes a downloadable shop comparison record.

Conductance testing evaluates a battery's electrical response to a small signal; a load test observes its response to an applied load under specified conditions. The results depend on the method and setup. Compare battery type, entered rating, charge condition, temperature and connections before treating different verdicts as a contradiction.

One battery report says good. Another says recharge and retest. Before choosing which result to believe, establish what each test evaluated and how it was set up. A useful comparison starts with the battery identity and test conditions, not with a vote between two verdicts.
This guide concerns 12-volt lead-acid starting batteries and professional diagnostic records. It is not a procedure for high-voltage traction batteries or a universal test sequence. Follow current vehicle, battery and equipment instructions, including inspection and safety requirements, before applying a test or charging a battery.
What the two methods ask
A conductance test uses a small electrical signal and the battery's response to assess its condition. A load test applies a specified load and observes the response under the prescribed conditions. A displayed estimate from one method is not the same measurement as voltage recorded during a particular load test.
The comparison therefore needs the method, setup and exact result. Do not translate a tester's estimated cranking figure into proof that a standardized cold-cranking test was performed. Likewise, do not expand one satisfactory load-test result into a finding about every aspect of battery performance.
Cranking ability, support for accessory loads and charge acceptance are different questions. An archived Subaru battery-testing bulletin explicitly separates those areas and stresses correct battery-type and rating inputs. Its January 2022 revision is an example of why the question and setup matter; check the current instructions for the actual application.
Check the setup before comparing the verdict
Use a short identity block on every saved test report:
- Battery identification and chemistry, taken from the battery and applicable information.
- Label rating and rating standard, plus what was entered into the tester.
- Tool identification, software version, selected method and report timestamp.
- Connection points and any connection problem reported during the test.
- Battery temperature and charge history or condition required by the procedure.
- Preparation completed, including any prescribed charging or waiting period.
A rating without its standard is an incomplete entry. A battery-type selection that does not match the battery also leaves the result in question. Keep missing inputs visible; do not reconstruct them from the verdict after the job is finished.
For hands-on work, use the specified PPE and ventilation, keep ignition sources away, and observe the inspection stop conditions in the applicable instructions. Batteries can present high-current, acid and gas hazards. The Isuzu service bulletin on battery and charging-system diagnosis illustrates these precautions and the need for defined test conditions. When the reports appear to disagree
First confirm that both records belong to the same battery. Next compare the inputs and the battery's condition at each test. Then identify whether the tests addressed the same performance question. Put any difference beside the result rather than hiding it in a general note.
Retain charge and retest as an unfinished instruction, not a pass and not an automatic replacement decision. Complete the prescribed follow-up and keep both records. If a connection problem or incorrect input is found, identify the affected result and repeat only as directed by the applicable procedure. Do not silently replace the original report with the more convenient answer.
Avoid a universal voltage cutoff, loading time or percentage-health threshold in the shop's comparison template. The relevant specifications belong to the battery, equipment and vehicle procedure being used. Record the reference and result together.
A fictional example: the missing battery-type field
In an invented training case, a vehicle arrives with a starting complaint and two reports. The first contains a favorable verdict but no saved battery-type selection. The second identifies the battery and requests charging followed by another test. Neither record includes a completed verification of the original complaint.
The next action is to resolve the missing setup information and follow the applicable charging and testing instructions. The first report cannot be treated as a fully documented result, and the second has not yet produced a completed post-charge verdict. No component replacement follows from this paperwork alone.
After the follow-up, attach the new result with the conditions under which it was obtained. If the battery meets the applicable criteria but the original complaint remains, keep that concern open and continue the prescribed diagnosis. A battery result should not silently become an all-clear for the cables, starter or charging system.
Keep the conclusion as specific as the test
