STEP for vehicle owners

Diagnose your own vehicle with a guided evidence-based process

STEP is preparing a vehicle-specific diagnostic path for owners who want to investigate a symptom or DTC without losing the thread between observations, checks, results, and the next decision.

It can help organize the process, but it cannot make unsafe work safe or replace the tools, information, training, and professional judgment a particular repair requires.

A clearer DIY diagnostic path

Start with what the vehicle actually shows

A code lookup can name a fault category. A guided case keeps the code connected to the symptom, operating conditions, measurements, completed work, and the question the next check must answer.

  1. 01

Identify the exact vehicle and concern

Start with the VIN, the behavior you are trying to understand, operating conditions, warning lights, DTCs, and recent work.

  2. 02

    Keep observations separate from assumptions

Record what the vehicle actually does, what has been measured, and which questions are still unresolved.

  3. 03

    Work through one relevant check

Follow the purpose, conditions, expected result, and evidence required for the next supported diagnostic step.

  4. 04

Record the result and verify the repair

Use the actual result to continue, change direction, or support a repair—then confirm the original concern is resolved.

What STEP can help you do

Keep the case organized, distinguish evidence from assumptions, understand why a check matters, record the actual result, and preserve the path to repair verification.

Know when the work needs a professional

STEP does not replace professional inspection, repair information, tools, training, or safety procedures. Do not continue when a check exceeds your equipment, experience, working environment, or ability to verify the result safely.

Vehicle-specific access

One diagnostic workspace for one VIN

The $39 price applies to one VIN for one year. STEP will confirm whether the vehicle and diagnostic workflow are supported before paid access begins.

The owner plan is separate from professional plans intended for technicians diagnosing multiple customer vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from vehicle owners

Is the $39 plan for one vehicle?

Yes. The $39 price applies to one VIN for one year. A different vehicle requires a separate Vehicle Owner plan.

Which vehicles and systems will be supported?

Vehicle and system coverage is still being expanded and validated. Available coverage for the VIN and diagnostic concern will be explained before paid access begins.

Does STEP diagnose the vehicle automatically?

No. STEP organizes evidence, develops and revises working hypotheses, and guides the next relevant check. You perform or arrange the physical work and decide whether the result is reliable enough to continue.

Will I need tools or repair information?

That depends on the vehicle and diagnostic path. Some checks may require a scan tool, multimeter, pressure gauge, service information, technical skill, or professional equipment. STEP does not replace those resources.

When should I stop and use a professional?

Do not perform a check when you cannot control the safety conditions, understand the procedure, access the correct equipment, or evaluate the result reliably. High-voltage, fuel, airbag, lifting, moving-component, braking, steering, and other safety-critical work may require trained professionals and appropriate facilities.

What happens after I request early access?

STEP collects your contact details and optional information about the vehicle and concern. As owner access opens, people whose VIN and diagnostic needs match the available workflow and coverage may be contacted.
