Relative Compression vs Compression Test: What Each Result Can Support

Understand relative cylinder comparison versus measured compression pressure, and record the evidence needed before recommending mechanical repair.

“Compression checked” is an incomplete repair-order note. Was the engine compared cylinder to cylinder during cranking, or was pressure measured with a compression gauge? Those results answer different questions, and the distinction matters when a shop recommends further mechanical diagnosis.

Start with the question you need answered, then name the method and preserve its actual output. Do not turn a relative percentage into a pressure value or a repair recommendation without supporting tests.

Relative compression is a comparison

Relative compression evaluates differences between cylinders using a cranking-related signal. The exact signal and calculation depend on the method. A useful historical example is Detroit's May 2018 relative cylinder compression instruction: that system uses engine speed during cranking and expresses results relative to the best cylinder.

The instruction directs technicians to manual compression testing when its specified difference criterion is exceeded. Its numeric criterion belongs to those engines and that procedure. It is not an acceptance limit for an unrelated passenger car or a different test method.

Treat relative results as comparative evidence. A normalized best cylinder does not establish an absolute cylinder-pressure measurement. A group of similar results describes similarity within that test; it does not independently certify every aspect of engine condition.

A manual compression test records pressure

A manual test uses the specified gauge or pressure-measuring equipment and engine-specific access method. In the historical Navistar May 2013 manual compression bulletin, technicians record gauge pressure under a prescribed procedure for one engine family.

The bulletin illustrates why “use a gauge” is not a complete work instruction. Tooling, access, preparation and reassembly depend on the engine. Obtain the current service procedure for the actual vehicle rather than borrowing the setup from this historical heavy-duty example.

Keep the pressure units with each result. Compare measurements only with the applicable specification and required test conditions. A number without its method and conditions is difficult to defend or repeat.

Choose the next test from the unresolved question

  • Is there a repeatable difference between cylinders? An applicable relative test can help address that comparison, provided its setup and interpretation requirements are met.
  • What pressure does a cylinder produce under the specified test? Obtain a measured pressure result using the approved procedure.
  • What caused an abnormal result? Follow the vehicle's diagnostic path for confirming the mechanical cause. The comparative result alone does not identify a failed part.
  • Does the result explain the customer's symptom? Compare the test conditions with the complaint conditions before declaring the case closed.

This is a decision framework, not permission to skip a prescribed diagnostic sequence. If the manufacturer requires a particular confirmation step, record and complete it.

Check the setup before interpreting the pattern

Write the procedure reference, engine identity and test conditions into the record. Include the equipment and method used, starting-system condition checks required by the procedure, and how unintended engine starting was prevented.

Follow the vehicle-specific instructions for disabling combustion, cranking duration, temperature conditions and safe access. Do not disconnect arbitrary components simply because a different engine's bulletin uses that approach. Protect against unexpected starting and follow high-pressure fuel, moving-part and battery precautions wherever the procedure requires them.

For a repeat test, document any changed conditions. A different result after a changed setup may be useful, but it should not be presented as a directly comparable repeat without explanation.

Keep cylinder identity explicit

Record how the test identifies each cylinder. If the method does not establish cylinder identity, label the result as an unidentified relative event until the prescribed identification step is complete. Do not assign a physical cylinder just from the order in which bars or peaks appear.

Preserve the original output alongside your interpretation. A coworker should be able to distinguish the instrument's labels from the cylinder assignment or conclusion added by the technician.

Fictional example: a low relative result

An imagined technician records a repeatable lower relative result during an applicable test. The next line of the repair order says “manual confirmation required by the diagnostic procedure,” rather than naming a valve, piston or cylinder-head repair.

The technician then records the confirmation method, measured result, units and applicable criterion. If it supports an abnormal mechanical condition, the next prescribed test addresses the cause. If it does not, the technician preserves both results and investigates the disagreement instead of deleting the less convenient one. This is a fictional documentation example, not a reported case or a diagnostic threshold.

Write a conclusion that matches the evidence

Use three separate fields: method, result and supported conclusion. “Relative comparison completed; confirmation pending” tells the next technician more than “compression bad.” A pressure result should identify its units and criterion, and a cause should point to the additional evidence that established it.
