
Do not start by guessing at parts. Separate battery condition, charging operation, and excessive key-off current, then isolate the circuit only after the draw is verified.
What the symptom means
A battery that goes dead overnight is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The main categories are battery condition, charging-system performance, and key-off parasitic current draw. A weak battery may not hold enough energy, a charging problem may leave a good battery undercharged, and a key-off draw may discharge the battery after the vehicle should be asleep.
Start with verification
Confirm how long the vehicle sat, what the crank condition was, whether a load was left on, and whether recent work or accessories were added. This prevents treating a one-time event like a repeating parasitic-draw fault.
Rule out the battery first
Charge the battery if it is low, then test battery condition using the proper tester procedure. Open-circuit voltage can help you understand state of charge, but it does not prove battery health by itself. If the battery fails after charging, resolve that foundation problem before continuing.
Then check charging operation
Before chasing a key-off draw, verify the charging system using the vehicle procedure. If charging operation is not acceptable, the battery may be going dead because it is not being replenished during normal driving. Scan-tool information can help guide the test, but codes do not prove a component has failed, and no codes do not prove the system is good.
Prepare the vehicle for sleep
Modern vehicles normally use some current after shutdown while modules finish their routines. A parasitic-draw test is valid only after the vehicle reaches the expected sleep state. Keep doors, hatches, keys, and fuse access from waking modules. If the vehicle wakes up during setup, restart the sleep procedure.
Measure key-off current safely
Use a low-amp current clamp or a correctly protected series ammeter setup to measure key-off current. A series ammeter can be damaged by high-current events, so do not crank the engine or switch heavy loads on through the meter. A test light or ordinary voltmeter is not a reliable substitute for measuring parasitic current.
Interpret the current reading
Once the vehicle has gone to sleep, compare the current reading to the vehicle-specific specification. If current settles normally, a constant draw is less likely at that moment. If current remains high, the excessive key-off draw is verified. If the draw appears later, use longer monitoring to catch the delayed or intermittent event.
Identify the affected circuit
When the draw is present, fuse voltage-drop testing can identify which fused circuit is carrying current without pulling fuses first. Pulling and reinstalling fuses can wake modules and confuse the result. A current-carrying fuse gives you a circuit direction, not a failed part.
Narrow the load
Use the wiring diagram and service information to isolate branches or loads on the suspect circuit one at a time while watching total key-off current. If no fused circuit explains the draw, move to unfused or main power paths, including charging-circuit paths, using the vehicle procedure. Exact locations, connectors, and wire details are vehicle-specific.
Confirm the result
After the condition is corrected or the diagnostic direction is addressed, repeat the checks. Battery condition should be acceptable, charging operation should be acceptable, and key-off current should return to the expected sleep level after the vehicle goes back to sleep.
