Confirm that this is an electric-fan problem

This diagnostic route applies only to an electrically driven engine-cooling or condenser/cooling fan. Do not use it for a belt-driven mechanical fan or a fan-clutch concern; those systems require a different vehicle-specific mechanical diagnostic procedure. Confirm the fan type before looking for a fan request, relay, power feed, ground, or electric motor fault.

Start with safety and confirm the symptom

If there is steam, coolant loss, or a severe temperature symptom, stop safely and follow the owner’s manual and vehicle-specific service direction before continuing. An electric fan can start unexpectedly, and a hot cooling system can cause serious injury. When no immediate stop condition exists, record the exact condition in which the electric fan was observed not running. Keep hands and tools away from the fan area, and perform hands-on inspection with the engine off and cool.

An electric fan that is off is not always failed

Electric cooling fans follow a vehicle control strategy. Depending on the vehicle, temperature-related conditions, A/C-related conditions, speed, and other enabling conditions can affect whether the system requests fan operation. Do not assume the fan should run just because the key is on, the engine is idling, or the engine is cool. Use vehicle-specific information to establish whether the fan should be requested in the recorded condition.

Split the diagnosis into two paths

Use scan data when available. Read relevant codes and freeze-frame information, then compare temperature-related and A/C-related data with any available fan request, command, desired-speed, or feedback data. A supported bidirectional command may also help, but only when the vehicle-specific procedure allows it. Codes guide diagnosis; they do not prove that a component has failed. No codes also do not prove that the electric-fan system is working correctly.

Path one: no fan request

If the control system is not requesting the electric fan when the vehicle-specific procedure says it should, stay on the input and control path. Check relevant temperature and A/C-related inputs, enabling conditions, wiring, connector condition, and controller logic with correct service information. Do not condemn the fan motor, relay, sensor, or controller from one data item alone. Isolate the specific input or control path that does not agree with the procedure.

Path two: valid request but no fan response

If a valid request is present but the electric fan does not run, inspect the fan assembly and accessible circuit areas first. Look for a blocked or damaged fan, damaged connectors, corrosion, heat damage, and rubbed wiring. Then use the vehicle-specific wiring diagram to test circuit protection and power delivery while the request is active. A loaded test matters because a connection or relay contact can appear normal until it carries current.

Follow missing power or usable power in different directions

Missing power directs the diagnosis toward the protection device, feed circuit, relay or fan-control-module output, command path, and wiring. Usable power at the proper point directs the diagnosis toward the ground path and an approved fan-motor or fan-assembly test. Circuit architecture differs by vehicle, so use the specified test sequence. Do not bypass protection devices, force a relay, or apply direct power as a generic shortcut.

Confirm the repair

After a vehicle-specific test proves a fault and the correct repair is completed, recreate the same safe condition or approved command that established the complaint. Confirm that the electric fan responds as expected. Then check for related warnings, codes, and any separate diagnostic finding retained during the process. A repair is confirmed by restored operation under the relevant condition, not simply by replacing a part or clearing a code.
