A normal-crank no-start is easier to diagnose when you stop guessing at parts and identify which required engine function is missing.

Define the symptom first

This path is for an engine that cranks at an apparently normal speed but does not start and continue running. If the engine cranks slowly or does not crank, diagnose the starting system first. If you are not sure the battery and cranking condition can support testing, verify that first; weak or abnormal cranking can make later scan, spark, injector, fuel, compression, and timing results misleading.

Save scan information before clearing anything

Connect a scan tool and record stored codes, pending codes, freeze-frame information, MIL status, and useful live data. A DTC is a clue, not proof that a part has failed. No DTCs do not prove that the engine has spark, fuel, compression, breathing, or timing.

Start with engine-speed input

During a short crank, check whether the scan tool shows believable engine-speed data. If that input is missing or unreasonable, stay with the speed-signal direction. Use vehicle-specific service information to test the circuit, control input, and mechanical target before judging any part.

Check spark, then injector control

If engine-speed input is supported, check spark with an approved tester. No spark points toward ignition control, power, ground, enable logic, or timing-input testing. If spark is present, check injector control during cranking. Injector command proves only the command function; it does not prove fuel pressure or fuel quality.

Check fuel delivery and breathing

If injector control is present, test fuel delivery with the correct equipment and the correct vehicle specification. Generic pressure numbers are not enough. If fuel delivery is supported, inspect intake-and-exhaust breathing. A severe intake restriction, collapsed duct, obstructed throttle path, disconnected critical air-measurement duct, or severe exhaust restriction can prevent starting or cause an immediate stall. Confirm suspected exhaust restriction with service-approved testing, not generic backpressure numbers or model-specific assumptions.

Do not forget compression and timing

A crank/no-start can still be mechanical even when spark, injector control, fuel delivery, and breathing appear present. Check compression or relative compression with approved disable procedures and valid cranking support. If compression is supported, check timing and synchronization with service information. The engine may have the right ingredients but at the wrong time.

Confirm the repair

After the fault direction is repaired, confirm the result. The engine should start normally, related codes should not return, and no new symptom should appear. If the no-start remains, recheck the test setup and return to the missing-function path.
