
When a gasoline engine starts only with pedal input, do not guess at parts. Use the pedal response to choose between closed-throttle airflow, rich or flooded mixture, and throttle input or control testing.
What this symptom means
This symptom means the engine cranks, but it only catches or stays running when the accelerator is opened. That is a useful observation, but it is not a parts diagnosis. Pressing the pedal can change airflow, throttle command, and sometimes clear-flood behavior during cranking.
Start with verification and scan data
Verify whether the vehicle needs a light pedal opening or a wide-open pedal. Note whether it dies when the pedal is released and whether there is a fuel smell or rough rich start. Then scan before clearing anything. Record codes, freeze-frame information, and useful live data. Codes point to a system area; they do not prove a component is failed. No codes do not prove the system is good.
Branch one: closed-throttle airflow
If a light pedal opening helps and the engine dies when the pedal is released, check the closed-throttle air path first. Inspect the air inlet, ducting, throttle bore, throttle movement, and obvious connector damage. Use service information before moving or cleaning an electronic throttle body. If the visual check does not explain the symptom, compare commanded idle or throttle control with actual response on a scan tool.
Branch two: rich or flooded mixture
If a wide-open pedal helps, especially with fuel smell or a rough rich start, look for rich or flooded mixture evidence. On many vehicles, wide-open throttle during cranking may reduce fuel delivery as a clear-flood strategy, but the exact behavior is vehicle-specific. Check mixture evidence, fuel pressure behavior, purge flow when it should be closed, and sensor data that does not match the engine condition.
Branch three: throttle input and control
If pedal input, throttle position, or throttle-control data is implausible or contradicted by related codes, test the throttle input and control path. That means checking the data relationship, connectors, wiring integrity, actuator response, and module command using service information. Do not replace a throttle body or sensor just to see whether the symptom changes.
When the branches do not fit
If airflow, mixture, and throttle-control checks do not explain the complaint, return to the basic no-start checks. Verify ignition, injector control, compression or timing indicators, and intake vacuum indicators using approved procedures. The accelerator clue may be only one part of a broader starting problem.
How to confirm the fix
After any verified correction, repeat the original start condition without touching the accelerator. Confirm that the engine starts normally, idles normally, and does not bring back the same codes or symptoms. If it still needs pedal input, return to the classification step and test the next supported branch.
