
Use actual coolant-temperature data to separate a reporting concern from real excess cooling, and route normal engine temperature with weak cabin heat to the correct heater/HVAC procedure.
Start by verifying what “slow warm-up” means
Do not diagnose this complaint from the dash gauge or cabin heat alone. Record outside conditions, trip type, heater use, and exact warning behavior. Cold weather, short trips, heater demand, and light engine load can change what the driver notices. If owner information, a service procedure, or another severe symptom directs immediate action, stop safely rather than driving for verification.
Record scan data before clearing anything
Save all codes, freeze-frame information, coolant-temperature data, and available related temperature data. A warm-up-related code identifies a system direction; it does not prove that a thermostat, sensor, fan component, or another part has failed. No relevant code also does not prove the system is good.
Inspect cooling-system and signal-path conditions without losing either finding
With the engine cold and safe to inspect, check coolant level by the vehicle procedure, visible leaks, contamination, and accessible temperature-sensor connectors and wiring. A cooling-system condition can require correction before later temperature observations are reliable. If a cooling-system condition and a signal-path condition are both found, retain both. Correct the cooling-system condition as required, then complete the vehicle-specific sensor and circuit procedure. If the signal path passes while slow warm-up remains verified, return to temperature-plausibility testing before choosing a fan or heat-control branch.
Decide whether the temperature data is believable
After an appropriate cold soak, compare scan-tool coolant-temperature data with surrounding conditions and observe whether it rises plausibly during warm-up. Implausible data points to a vehicle-specific sensor and circuit test. Plausible data that rises unusually slowly supports an actual excess-cooling or coolant heat-control direction. Do not use a generic temperature number as a pass-or-fail specification.
Normal engine temperature but weak cabin heat is a different route
When coolant-temperature behavior is appropriate for the documented conditions but cabin heat remains weak after adequate operating time, do not continue diagnosing an engine slow-warm-up fault. Exit to the applicable vehicle-specific heater/HVAC and coolant-circulation diagnostic procedure. This episode does not provide generic heater-output specifications or identify an HVAC component.
Branch to fan control or coolant heat control
Observe fan behavior safely. A fan that appears to run continuously during a cold start needs the vehicle-specific fan-control procedure because some fan operation may be commanded by design. If fan operation matches the applicable strategy while verified temperature rises too slowly, use the vehicle-specific procedure to evaluate thermostat regulating behavior and related coolant heat control. Do not replace a part as a diagnostic test.
Confirm the original complaint is gone
After an approved repair, repeat the recorded cold-start conditions as closely as practical. Confirm appropriate temperature behavior, heater behavior, and fan behavior when relevant. Check for returning related faults through the applicable procedure. Clearing a code alone is not confirmation.
