A long crank is not a parts list. Use the condition pattern, scan data, fuel retention, engine-speed signal, and mixture clues to choose the next test.

What counts as a long crank?

A long crank before starting means the starter turns the engine at normal speed, the engine eventually starts, but it takes longer than expected to begin running. Separate that from a slow crank, a no crank, and a crank/no-start. Those complaints use different diagnostic paths.

Start with the condition pattern

Record when the delayed start happens. The most useful patterns are after sitting, cold only, hot-soak only, restart only, and every time. Try to reproduce the same condition instead of judging an overnight complaint from one quick restart.

Save scan data before clearing anything

Scan for stored and pending codes, freeze-frame information, and live data before clearing codes. A code can point toward a system, but it does not prove a part has failed. No codes do not prove the systems are good, so keep testing when the symptom is real.

Check engine-speed recognition during crank

Watch the scan-tool engine-speed signal while the starter is turning the engine. If the signal is present and stable, continue to the condition and mixture branches. If the signal is missing or dropping out, the next direction is engine-speed sensing, related circuits, and power and ground checks using service information.

Use fuel retention clues after sitting

When the long crank is strongest after the vehicle sits, a key-on prime routine can be a useful comparison. If priming shortens the crank, that supports a fuel pressure build or hold direction. It still does not prove which part is faulty. Confirm the direction with fuel pressure build-and-hold testing and the correct vehicle-specific procedure.

Use mixture clues for hot and cold patterns

Before start, compare coolant and intake-air temperature data to the vehicle condition. After start, look for lean or rich clues when available. Lean clues send the diagnosis toward fuel delivery, unmetered air, or air-measurement checks. Rich clues send it toward excess fuel, purge influence, or fuel-control checks.

Return to the basics when no branch is clear

If the long crank happens every time and scan clues do not select a branch, verify the basic requirements for a gasoline engine to start: fuel delivery, ignition output, compression, timing relationship, and air path. Use service information for exact procedures and specifications.

Confirm under the same condition

Confirmation must match the original complaint. If the symptom appeared after sitting, retest after a similar rest time. If it appeared hot, retest hot. A diagnostic direction is stronger when the same condition improves and the related scan or physical test clues no longer point to the same area.
