
Confirm the misfire, branch by cylinder distribution, and use load, RPM, scan, fuel, ignition, and mechanical evidence without guessing at parts.
First confirm that it is a misfire
A rough idle is not automatically a combustion misfire. Reproduce the complaint safely, note temperature and operating condition, and observe changes with RPM or load. Use available misfire counters, cylinder-contribution or power-balance information, or another vehicle-appropriate confirmation method. If the engine is rough without corroborating misfire activity, keep the condition in a rough-idle path and consider vehicle-appropriate idle-control, airflow, purge, EGR, and other non-misfire causes.
Scan before clearing data
Record stored and pending codes, freeze-frame data, misfire information, fuel trims, and monitor status when available. A code narrows a monitored area but does not identify a failed part. No code, an unavailable counter, or an incomplete monitor does not prove that the vehicle is fault-free.
Branch by cylinder distribution
For a cylinder-specific misfire, focus on the affected cylinder and its individual or shared systems. There is no universal order: depending on the evidence and service procedure, relative-compression or other mechanical evaluation may be an early branch alongside measured ignition and fuel or injector testing. For random or multi-cylinder behavior, keep shared air, fuel, ignition, and mechanical causes open, with air-leak and fuel-trim evaluation often useful when the symptom is strongest at idle.
Use fuel trims carefully
Inspect air and vacuum plumbing, then compare fuel-trim behavior only under stable, comparable operating conditions. Unmetered air can have a greater effect at idle because it is a larger share of total airflow. However, trim behavior is not specific to an intake leak. Operating-loop status, exhaust leaks, sensor or airflow plausibility, purge or EGR influence, fuel-delivery faults, and the misfire itself can affect the result. Conflicting trim evidence requires more testing rather than an air-leak repair conclusion.
Test fuel, injector, and ignition directions
A vehicle-specific fuel or injector test can help distinguish inadequate shared delivery from a cylinder-specific injector contribution problem. An abnormal result identifies a direction for further testing, not automatic authorization to replace a pump or injector. For ignition, use measured or cylinder-specific evidence and an approved procedure; do not use uncontrolled parts swapping as the test.
Interpret and confirm
Review the symptom versus RPM and load, cylinder distribution, scan data, inspection findings, trim limitations, and system-test results together. Exact limits and procedures require vehicle-specific service information. After the authorized correction, reproduce the original condition and confirm that the symptom and supporting evidence have been corrected or explained. If the symptom remains, return to the appropriate branch rather than replacing another part at random.
