
When idle gets rough only after a load is applied, separate engine compensation from abnormal accessory demand before testing parts.
What this symptom means
A load-related rough idle is a shake, dip, surge, or stall that appears or gets worse when an accessory or electrical load is turned on. Common examples include A/C, defroster, blower motor, headlights, rear defogger, or a steering load. The key is comparison: how does the engine idle with loads off, and what changes when one load is applied?
The two main paths
Keep two broad paths separate. In the first path, the engine fails to compensate for a normal load. The controller may see the load and try to react, but the engine still cannot idle smoothly. In the second path, the accessory or electrical system creates abnormal demand. One accessory may engage harshly, drag, make noise, disturb the belt, or pull the power supply down.
Verify before diagnosing
Start with a safe verification. Park the vehicle, set the brake, and compare idle quality with all loads off. Then turn on the suspect load. If the engine is already rough with loads off, diagnose the base rough idle first. The added load may only make an existing engine-performance problem more noticeable.
Inspect for obvious problems
Before holding the engine at idle for testing, inspect for obvious issues. Look for a loose intake duct, disconnected hose, damaged belt, pulley concern, or poor battery connection. Keep hands, tools, clothing, and test leads away from moving belts, pulleys, fans, and hot parts.
Use codes and live data correctly
Scan for stored, pending, and history DTCs, then watch live data while the symptom happens. Codes and data point to a direction, not an automatic parts answer. A DTC does not prove a component has failed, and no DTCs do not prove the system is good. Compare no-load data to load-on data and look for changes in load request, idle control, misfire, fuel control, and voltage or charging information where available.
If the engine fails to compensate
If the controller appears to see the load and idle control reacts, but the engine still shakes, follow the engine-performance path. Test the systems that allow smooth idle torque: intake air integrity, throttle or idle-control operation, fuel control, ignition, misfire direction, and engine mechanical condition. Use service information for exact procedures and specifications.
If the load signal is missing
If the load turns on but the expected request, command, or idle-up information is missing on a vehicle that should provide it, stay in the signal and control path. Test the switch input, module command, control circuit, or wiring path using vehicle-specific service information. Do not jump circuits or bypass controls without the correct procedure.
If the accessory demands too much
If one accessory causes heavy drag, abnormal noise, belt distress, or voltage-related changes while other loads are handled normally, stay in that accessory or power-supply system. Belt-driven accessory concerns and A/C concerns require proper equipment and safe procedures. Electrical-load symptoms may point toward the battery, charging system, grounds, or power-supply path.
Confirm the result
After the verified fault path is corrected, repeat the same test that reproduced the complaint. Use the same load, watch the same data direction, and confirm the idle stays stable. If the symptom remains, return to classification instead of replacing parts by guess.
