An acceleration-only vibration is a pattern to classify—not proof that the transmission, converter clutch, CV joint, mount, tire, or engine has failed.

Start with safety and a precise symptom

If vibration is severe, vehicle control feels affected, or the vehicle’s information directs immediate action, stop safely and do not continue with a road test. Otherwise, write down exactly when the vibration occurs, where it is felt, and whether warnings are present. “Only during acceleration” is not yet a diagnosis.

Separate the main patterns

An engine-load vibration follows engine RPM or load. A road-speed vibration rises mainly with vehicle speed. A bump, clunk, or movement when power is applied supports a mount or driveline direction. A repeatable shift-related event and a repeatable converter-clutch-apply-related condition identified by vehicle information are separate observations. More than one pattern can be present, so retain each direction rather than allowing one finding to erase another.

Scan for context, then inspect competing external inputs

Scan before clearing information. Codes and scan data can support an engine-running or transmission-control direction, but they do not prove a component has failed. No codes do not prove the system is good. A scan-supported direction does not eliminate tire, wheel, brake, chassis, mount, or driveline directions, so inspect those external inputs safely with the engine off.

Follow the direction the pattern supports

A road-speed pattern calls for a vehicle-specific tire, wheel, brake, and chassis procedure. A bump, clunk, or powertrain movement calls for vehicle-specific mount and driveline inspection. An engine-load pattern calls for engine testing guided by the symptom and scan context. Inner CV, axle, and intermediate-shaft directions require their own applicable procedure. Propeller-shaft and operating-angle evaluation applies only to vehicles equipped with the relevant driveline layout and requires vehicle-specific criteria. If one procedure does not support its direction, return to the remaining recorded directions instead of repeating the same broad check.

Do not make transmission testing the default—or exclude converter-clutch testing

A vehicle-specific transmission or torque-converter procedure can be appropriate when there is a repeatable shift-related event, or when vehicle information identifies a repeatable converter-clutch-apply-related condition supported by applicable scan or NVH observations. Do not call either pattern a transmission failure by itself. Keep tire, wheel, brake, chassis, engine, mount, and driveline directions retained separately; they do not have to be presumed eliminated before an applicable transmission or converter procedure begins. Exact converter-clutch confirmation conditions, data items, and tests are vehicle-specific. If that procedure does not support the transmission or converter direction, return to the unfinished active direction.

Confirm the result

After a verified correction, recheck under the same safe conditions that produced the original vibration. If the symptom remains, changes, or another observed direction remains active, reclassify the evidence and continue that unfinished path.
