Run the climate control self-diagnostic routine with the HDS or with the climate control unit, and check for DTCs. If B1240 is indicated again, continue into the circuit checks. If it is not indicated, treat it like an intermittent fault and inspect for loose wires or poor connections in the mode control motor circuit before going any deeper.

Check the DEF side of the motor circuit for an open

Now power the car down: ignition switch at LOCK (0), or OFF mode on the start-stop system. Disconnect the climate control unit 32P connector and the mode control motor 7P connector. With both ends unplugged, check continuity on the MODE MTR DEF/M-DEF line between climate control unit 32P connector No. 5, the GRN wire, and mode control motor 7P connector No. 6, also the GRN wire. If you have continuity, that wire is not open, and you move to the next motor-control line. If you do not have continuity, repair the open in the wire between the climate control unit and the mode control motor.

Check the VENT side of the motor circuit for an open

Keep the same setup: ignition at LOCK (0) or OFF mode, climate control unit 32P connector disconnected, and mode control motor 7P connector disconnected. Check continuity on the MODE MTR VENT/M-VENT line between climate control unit 32P connector No. 4, the WHT wire, and mode control motor 7P connector No. 7, also the WHT wire. If continuity is present, that wire is not open, so keep going. If continuity is missing, repair the open in the wire between the climate control unit and the mode control motor.

Check the DEF line for a short to ground

Next, leave both connectors disconnected and keep the ignition at LOCK (0), or OFF mode. Check the MODE MTR DEF line from climate control unit 32P connector No. 5, the GRN wire, to body ground. This is a short-to-ground check, so continuity here is a failure. If there is continuity to body ground, repair the short to body ground in the wire between the climate control unit and the mode control motor. If there is no continuity, the MODE MTR DEF/M-DEF wire is OK, and you continue to the VENT line.

Check the VENT line for a short to ground

Now check the MODE MTR VENT line the same way. With the ignition at LOCK (0) or OFF mode, and with the climate control unit 32P connector and mode control motor 7P connector still disconnected, check from climate control unit 32P connector No. 4, the WHT wire, to body ground. If there is continuity, repair the short to body ground in the wire between the climate control unit and the mode control motor. If there is no continuity, the MODE MTR VENT/M-VENT wire is OK, and the wiring checks have passed for these two lines.

Test the mode control motor and make the final call

Once both motor-control wires pass the open checks and the short-to-ground checks, test the mode control motor. If the mode control motor tests OK, replace the climate control unit. If the mode control motor does not test OK, replace the mode control motor, or repair the mode control linkage or doors. Do not jump to the control unit until the wiring and motor side of the circuit have been proven.

Verify and wrap up

After the repair, verify the fault the same disciplined way you started: clear the DTCs with the HDS, cycle from LOCK (0) to ON (II), or from OFF mode to ON mode, run the climate control self-diagnostic routine, and confirm B1240 does not return.
