Bring engine speed to 1,000 rpm or higher, release the accelerator without pressing it again, and hold that condition for at least 4 seconds. Then slow down, stop the wheels, and check the HDS for pending or confirmed P0502. If vehicle speed is going above 31 mph (50 km/h), use VSA maintenance mode. If P0502 comes back, the failure is duplicated and the circuit checks begin. Check the VCC2 feed at the sensor connector

This is the VCC2 check. You are looking for about 5 V. If about 5 V is present, the VCC2 feed is considered OK and you move ahead to the SG2 check. If about 5 V is not present, stay on the VCC2 line and check it for an open.

Check VCC2 continuity back to the PCM

For the VCC2 open check, turn the vehicle OFF, jump the SCS line with the HDS, and disconnect PCM connector C, the 51P connector. Check continuity between the CVT speed sensor 3P connector terminal No. 3, TAN wire, and PCM connector C terminal No. 30, also TAN. If there is no continuity, repair the open in the VCC2 wire between the CVT speed sensor and the PCM. If continuity is present, the VCC2 wire is OK. That branch points toward checking PCM software status or substituting a known-good PCM and then rechecking. Do not guess at the final PCM decision on that branch; pause, recheck the earlier diagnostic path, and confirm the next action before committing.

Check the SG2 side using the sensor connector

Next, check the SG2 side. Measure voltage between the CVT speed sensor 3P connector terminal No. 2, the GRY wire, and terminal No. 3, the TAN wire. The vehicle is in ON mode and the CVT speed sensor connector remains disconnected. You are again looking for about 5 V. If about 5 V is present, SG2 is considered OK and the signal wire checks are next. If about 5 V is not present, repair the open in the SG2 wire between the CVT speed sensor and the PCM.

Check the VEL DD signal wire for a short to ground

Now move to the VEL DD signal circuit. Turn the vehicle OFF, jump the SCS line with the HDS, and disconnect PCM connector C, the 51P connector. With the CVT speed sensor connector still disconnected, check continuity between terminal No. 1, the WHT wire, and body ground. If there is continuity, repair the short to body ground in the VEL DD wire between the CVT speed sensor and the PCM. If there is no continuity, the signal wire is not shorted to ground, so continue with the open-circuit check.

Check the VEL DD signal wire for an open

For the final circuit check, test continuity between the CVT speed sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1, WHT wire, and PCM connector C terminal No. 32, also WHT. If there is no continuity, repair the open in the VEL DD wire between the CVT speed sensor and the PCM. If continuity is present, the VEL DD wire is OK, and this diagnostic path supports replacing the CVT speed sensor.

Verify the repair

After the circuit repair, software check, PCM-side check, or sensor replacement path is completed, verify the repair separately. Clear the code, run the vehicle under the same operating conditions used to duplicate the fault, and confirm P0502 stays gone.
