If other codes are present, check what they mean first, then follow a structured diagnostic approach so you are not chasing a leak test when another issue is steering the result. P0442 uses an engine-off natural vacuum test, so reproduce the operating conditions instead of judging the vehicle from a random key cycle. Treat these as monitor gates: BARO greater than 70 kPa, fuel level between 10–90%, cold start ECT and start-up IAT within 8°C (14°F), ECT greater than 63°C (145°F), engine run time before shut-off greater than 10 min, and ambient temperature at the end of the drive cycle between 0–34°C (32–93°F). The test runs once per drive cycle during the hot soak period after the ignition is turned OFF and may require up to 40 min to complete. The module will not make more than 2 test attempts per day, and the time since the last completed engine off natural vacuum test must be at least 17 h if it passed or 10 h if it failed. That matters during verification because the MIL status may not change instantly.

Seal the EVAP system for testing

Once the preliminary checks are handled, disconnect the purge tube at the quick connector on the EVAP canister side of the Q12 Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve, and install the CH 48096. Then connect the GE 41413-A to the CH 48096. With the scan tool, command the EVAP Vent Solenoid function to Not Venting. That seals the EVAP system so the leak check is being done against a closed system, not an open vent path.

Measure first, then smoke if needed

Use the flow meter on the GE 41413-A, calibrated to 0.51 mm (0.020 in), to determine if there is a leak. Give the equipment and vehicle a fair chance to stabilize: larger volume fuel tanks, or tanks with lower fuel levels, may require several minutes for the floating indicator to stabilize or produce smoke, and the underbody temperature of the vehicle and the tester should be similar. If the flow test indicates a leak, apply smoke to the EVAP system at the purge tube with the GE 41413-A until the leak is located using the GE 41413-SPT.

Leak-finding tips

For faster smoke filling, open the system opposite the smoke entry point until smoke is observed, then close the system and continue testing. If the leak is intermittent, move EVAP components while watching for smoke with the GE 41413-SPT. Individual components can also be isolated and tested with the adapters in the GE 41413-300. Also keep in mind that some EVAP leaks may only show up under vacuum. In that case, the scan tool Purge/Seal function can be used to create vacuum in the EVAP system, and the FTP sensor parameter can be watched for vacuum decay.

If a leak is detected and located, repair or replace the affected component as necessary. If no leak is detected with the system sealed and the flow meter calibrated correctly, the leak check is all OK. Do not force a part into the repair just because P0442 was stored; the test result has to support the repair decision.
