Diagnostic path

Open on P0102

On this 2015 to 2025 F-150 with the 2.7 EcoBoost, P0102 is a mass air flow circuit low code. In plain terms, the PCM may be seeing a MAF signal that is lower than it expects during a running self-test. The truck may have driveability complaints like rough running, hesitation, poor power, or it may only have the light on. Broadly, this can come from the MAF signal circuit, an intake air leak or restriction, the sensor area, or a PCM-side concern. Treat it as a circuit-and-airflow diagnosis, not as a parts call.

Start with the basic system checks

First, make sure this intake-air-flow diagnostic path applies. If P0102 is present, continue into the intake air and MAF checks. If you are working a symptom with no DTC, this same starting point can still apply. If neither of those fits, do not force this path; use the symptom-based direction instead.

Inspect the intake side before testing wires

With the ignition off, diagnose the suspect MAF sensor indicated by the code. Check the intake air system for restrictions, including the air cleaner, housing, and tubes. Look for broken or loose air outlet tube clamps, cracks, holes, or damaged gaskets between the MAF/IAT sensor and the air cleaner assembly. Make sure the MAF/IAT connector is fully seated. Also check the throttle body bore for sludge, and check the crankcase ventilation system for leaks or restrictions. If you find a concern here, repair it as needed, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If the intake side checks clean, move into the electrical checks.

Run the MAF/IAT circuit checks in order

Next is voltage to the MAF/IAT sensor. The decision point is whether the voltage is greater than 5V. If it is greater than 5V, keep going. If it is not greater than 5V, repair the open circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. Then, with the ignition off and the PCM connector disconnected, check the MAF harness for an open. The resistance decision point is less than 5 ohms. If the resistances are less than 5 ohms, continue. If they are not, repair the open circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. After that, check the MAF signal circuit for a short. The resistance decision point is greater than 10000 Ω. If it is greater than 10000 Ω, move on. If it is not, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. Then check for a short to voltage with the ignition on. If any voltage is present, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If no voltage is present, continue to the intermittent checks. For these electrical checks, make sure you have verified circuit and connector identification before touching the meter leads. Do not guess at pin locations.

Check for an intermittent at the sensor

If the hard circuit checks pass, reconnect the PCM connector and the MAF/IAT sensor connector. Start the engine. Bring the engine up to 1,500 RPM for 5 seconds, then back to idle. Do that a second time. Then lightly tap near the MAF sensor housing and wiggle the harness connector to simulate road shock while watching the MAF PID. All PIDs may not be available on every truck, so use the data that is actually available. If the MAF PID reading changes during this check, clean the MAF/IAT sensor using CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner 05110 or equivalent, reset KAM, and repeat the self-test. If the PID does not change, continue to the harness intermittent check.

Check the harness for an intermittent

Now watch the MAF PID while you wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the wiring harness, working from the sensor back toward the PCM. If the MAF PID reading changes, repair the harness as necessary, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If the PID still does not change on a P0102 diagnosis, pause here. The next branch after this point is not a clean continuation for this P0102 low-circuit path. Recheck the earlier intake inspection, circuit checks, connector condition, and intermittent testing before making a guess.

Shared humidity check, only if that branch applies

There is also a relative-humidity check used in this shared intake-air-flow diagnostic path. If your testing legitimately lands in that branch, turn the ignition on, access the PCM, monitor the REL_HMDTY (%) PID, and record the value. Compare that PID to the daily humidity level from a local weather report, because most local reports include relative humidity. Make that comparison with the vehicle at ambient conditions. Indoor and outdoor humidity can be considerably different, so cold soak the vehicle outside for a minimum of 8 hours if necessary. If the REL_HMDTY (%) PID compares with the reported humidity, the condition cannot be duplicated at that point; check for loose connections, damaged or corroded terminals, and wiggle the harness to try to recreate the concern, then repair as necessary. If the PID does not compare with the reported humidity, install a new MAF/IAT sensor, reset KAM, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test.

Verify the repair

Keep verification separate from testing. After any repair called out by this path, clear the PCM DTCs and repeat the self-test. If the path had you clean the MAF/IAT sensor, reset KAM before retesting. The job is not finished until the self-test passes and P0102 stays gone.
