Start with code and symptom direction
Start with the basic system checks and see what is stored. For a P0202 concern, the injector diagnostic path starts here. If the applicable injector circuit code is present, continue into the injector tests. If the code is not present, but the complaint is no start, rough idle, or a miss, continue into the same path. For other complaints without the injector code, use symptom-based direction instead of forcing this test.
Use scan data to decide where to enter testing
With the ignition on, go into the PCM data and watch the individual injector fault PIDs along with the injector fault mode PID. If the injector fault data is showing a concern, skip ahead to the harness manipulation check. If it is not showing a concern, run the Power Balance Test. If that scan tool test is not available on the vehicle, move on to the next diagnostic step. Also make sure the low pressure fuel system is operating correctly before you blame the injector circuit. If the power balance result is satisfactory, the system is operating correctly at that time and the next move is symptom-based diagnosis. If the result is not satisfactory, continue with the injector circuit path.
Look for an intermittent harness concern
Next, start the engine and bring it up to normal operating temperature. Watch the same injector fault PIDs while you wiggle, shake, and bend small sections of the harness, working from the suspected injector back toward the PCM. If the injector fault PID reacts during that check, repair the affected wiring or connection as needed, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test. If the fault PID does not show a concern, move into hard circuit checks.
Check the injector circuits for opens
With the ignition off, disconnect the direct fuel injector connector and disconnect the PCM connector. This test covers multiple injectors, so only measure the INJ and INJRTN circuits that apply to the cylinder 2 P0202 concern. Make sure the cylinder-to-connector identification is confirmed at the vehicle before putting meter leads on the circuit. For the open-circuit check, resistance less than 5 Ω is the passing result and you continue to the short-to-ground check. If the resistance is not less than 5 Ω, repair the open circuit, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test.
Check for shorts to ground and voltage
Still working only on the applicable injector circuits, check the INJ and INJRTN circuits for a short to ground with the ignition off. The meter reference point has to be clear before you test; if it is not clear at the vehicle, pause and confirm the earlier diagnostic path instead of guessing. A resistance reading greater than 10000 Ω is the passing result, and then you continue to the short-to-voltage check. If it is not greater than 10000 Ω, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test. For the short-to-voltage check, turn the ignition on and measure the applicable circuit points. Again, do not guess at the meter reference. If any voltage is present, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test. If no voltage is present, continue.
Check for a short between the two injector circuits
Now check for a short between the INJ circuit and the INJRTN circuit with the ignition off. Measure across the applicable injector circuit pair only. Resistance greater than 10000 Ω is the passing result and moves you to the injector resistance check. If the resistance is not greater than 10000 Ω, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test.
Measure injector resistance
Next, measure the fuel injector resistance at the component side of the applicable connector. The expected range is between 1 Ω - 3 Ω. If the injector measures in that range and the Power Balance Test pointed to an injector concern, install a new fuel injector as necessary, reset KAM, clear the PCM codes, and repeat the self-test. If the injector measures in that range and the power balance result did not point to the injector, continue to the PCM connector check. If the injector resistance is not between 1 Ω - 3 Ω, install a new fuel injector, reset KAM, and repeat the self-test.
Check PCM connection and finish the diagnostic path
For the PCM check, disconnect all PCM connectors and inspect them for pushed-out pins and corrosion. Reconnect all of the PCM connectors and make sure they are fully seated, then verify whether the concern is still present. If the concern is still present after the circuit and injector checks have passed, install a new Powertrain Control Module and complete the required RVC step. If the concern is no longer present, the system is operating correctly at that time, and the issue may have been a loose or corroded connector.
Repair verification and takeaway
