Connect a T-fitting, a vacuum gauge, and a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, to the vacuum hose. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then use the HDS inspection menu to select EVAP PCS ON. Slowly apply about 2 kPa (0.6 inHg, 15 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose. If it holds vacuum, replace the EVAP canister purge valve, then verify the repair. If it does not hold vacuum, keep moving down the diagnostic path.
Check for a purge line restriction
Reconnect the vacuum hose to the EVAP canister purge valve. Then disconnect the vacuum hose from the purge line at the EVAP canister side, and connect the T-fitting, vacuum gauge, and vacuum pump/gauge to that hose. With EVAP PCS ON selected in the HDS inspection menu, apply about 2 kPa (0.6 inHg, 15 mmHg) of vacuum to the purge valve. If it holds vacuum here, check for a blockage in the purge line between the EVAP canister purge valve and the EVAP canister, then verify the repair. If it does not hold vacuum, go on to the FTP sensor response check.
Check FTP sensor response
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). Remove the FTP sensor with its connector still connected. Connect the T-fitting, vacuum pump/gauge, and vacuum gauge to the FTP sensor. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then check and record the FTP SENSOR reading in the HDS data list. Slowly apply about 1.3 kPa (0.4 inHg, 10 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose, and watch the FTP SENSOR value in the data list. If the value changes, the sensor is responding, so continue to the next EVAP canister purge line check. If the value does not change, replace the FTP sensor, then verify the repair.
Check the canister-side line with the vent commanded
Reconnect the vacuum hoses to the EVAP canister purge line at the EVAP canister side, and reinstall the FTP sensor. Then disconnect the purge line from the EVAP canister purge valve in the engine compartment, and connect the T-fitting, vacuum gauge, and vacuum pump/gauge to the vacuum hose. Use the HDS inspection menu to select EVAP CVS ON. Slowly apply about 2 kPa (0.6 inHg, 15 mmHg) of vacuum to the hose. If the hose holds vacuum, check for a blockage at the EVAP canister port, then verify the repair. If the hose does not hold vacuum, replace the EVAP canister vent shut valve, then verify the repair.
Verify the repair
For verification, turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and install the parts in the reverse order of removal. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS, perform the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure, and run the EVAP FUNCTION TEST with the HDS.
