Confirm the code before circuit testing
Start by clearing the DTC with the HDS. Turn the vehicle to OFF, then back to ON. Run the self-diagnostic function with the HDS or through the climate control unit, then check for DTCs again. If B1233, or 40, comes right back, continue into the circuit checks. If it does not return, treat it as an intermittent failure and inspect the driver’s air mix control motor circuit for loose wires or poor connections before going any deeper.
Check the driver’s air mix position signal line
With the code confirmed, turn the vehicle OFF and disconnect the driver’s air mix control motor 7P connector. Turn the vehicle back ON. Measure voltage from terminal No. 2 at that connector to body ground. You’re looking for about 5 V. If about 5 V is present, the AMD P DR, or AMD-P, line checks good at this point, so move to the common circuit check. If about 5 V is not present, skip ahead to the same signal line check at the climate control unit side.
Check the sensor common side at the motor connector
Next, leave the driver’s air mix control motor 7P connector disconnected and the vehicle ON. Measure between terminal No. 1 and terminal No. 2 at that connector. Again, the expected reading is about 5 V. If you have about 5 V, the SENSOR COM, or SENS-COM, wire checks good, and the diagnostic path points to replacing the driver’s air mix control motor. If you do not have about 5 V, repair an open in the wire between the climate control unit and the driver’s air mix control motor.
Check the signal line at the climate control unit side
If the first signal check at the motor connector did not show about 5 V, keep the vehicle ON with the motor connector disconnected and measure from the climate control unit 32P connector terminal No. 20 to body ground. The expected reading is still about 5 V. If about 5 V is present here, repair an open in the wire between the climate control unit and the driver’s air mix control motor. If about 5 V is not present here, the AMD-P line is considered OK by this diagnostic path, and the next call is replacing the climate control unit.
