On this 2017 to 2025 Honda CR-V with the 1.5 turbo, P04F1 is an EVAP low purge flow code. In plain terms, the PCM may be commanding purge and watching for the expected pressure response, but the system response can look too low under the monitor conditions. The driver may only notice a check engine light, and the vehicle may otherwise run normally. Broadly, this can involve the purge valve, purge plumbing, the canister side of the system, the ELCM side, or sealing issues around the fuel tank and filler flap area. Before troubleshooting, make sure the basic troubleshooting approach is squared away. Start with the basic system checks, follow a structured diagnostic approach, and if other codes are present, check what they mean first so you do not chase the wrong fault path.

Duplicate the low purge flow fault

Turn the vehicle to ON mode, then use the HDS to run the EVAP Purge Flow Check Test. If that test result is not OK, the failure has been duplicated. That is your confirmation that the low-purge-flow complaint is active enough to continue into system testing instead of guessing at parts.

Check the EVAP canister purge valve first

Next, inspect the EVAP canister purge valve. The valve is tested removed, but with its connector still connected. Use the required vacuum pump and gauge, 0-30 inHg, or an equivalent commercially available tool, and apply pressure or vacuum to the correct valve port for each test setup. First, for the open-stuck check, apply pressure to the one side port. The expected result is that pressure is held. Then command PCS ON with the HDS and do the close-stuck check. With pressure applied to the one side port, pressure should not be held. After that close-stuck result is within specification, continue with the leak and non-return valve open-stuck check. Command PCS ON, apply vacuum to the one side port, and vacuum should be held. Then check non-return valve A on the intake manifold side with PCS ON and vacuum applied to the one side port. For that check, vacuum should not be held. When you evaluate the purge valve, all of the inspections need to be within specification. If the valve inspections are abnormal, the problem is in the EVAP canister purge valve area.

Inspect purge system 1 and purge system 2

If the purge valve checks out, move down the purge path. For EVAP purge system 1, look for poor connections, blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage in the purge system components. The expected result is that the connections are OK, with no blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. If that inspection is abnormal, the fault area is EVAP purge system 1. Then go to EVAP purge system 2. For the blockage check, disconnect the purge tube from the EVAP canister purge valve, disconnect the fuel purge pipe from the EVAP canister, connect a hose to the fuel purge pipe, and connect the 0-30 inHg vacuum pump and gauge to that hose. Apply pressure to the hose. Pressure should not be held. If it is abnormal, the fault area is EVAP purge system 2. For the leakage check, only continue once the EVAP canister purge valve is known normal. Disconnect the fuel purge pipe from the EVAP canister, connect the hose and 0-30 inHg vacuum pump and gauge to the fuel purge pipe, then apply vacuum to the hose. Vacuum should be held. If it is abnormal, the fault area is still EVAP purge system 2.

Inspect the ELCM side, filler flap area, and fuel tank system

After the purge plumbing tests, inspect the ELCM system for the same kind of faults: poor connection, blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. The expected result is clean connections and no blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. If that is abnormal, the fault area is the ELCM system. Next, inspect the main flap unit with the mis-fuel inhibit device removed. Make sure the shut-off valve is closed, and inspect the flap seal and the mating surface for missing or damaged sealing surfaces. If that is abnormal, the fault area is the main flap unit. If the main flap unit is normal, continue with the fuel tank system leakage check. Disconnect the fuel vent tube from the EVAP canister, connect a hose to the fuel vent tube, and connect the 0-30 inHg vacuum pump and gauge to the hose. Apply vacuum to the hose. Vacuum should be held. If it is abnormal, the fault area is the fuel tank system.

Inspect the EVAP canister, then isolate the remaining module

Next is the EVAP canister. For the leakage check, disconnect the drain tube, fuel vent tube, and fuel purge pipe from the canister. Plug the drain tube port and the fuel vent tube port. Connect a hose to the fuel purge pipe port, then connect the 0-30 inHg vacuum pump and gauge to that hose. Apply vacuum to the hose. Vacuum should be held. If it is abnormal, the fault area is the EVAP canister. Then check the canister for blockage. Disconnect the drain tube, fuel vent tube, and fuel purge pipe from the canister, and plug the fuel vent tube port. Connect a hose to the drain tube port, then connect the 0-30 inHg vacuum pump and gauge. Apply pressure to the hose. Pressure should not be held. If it is abnormal, the fault area is the EVAP canister. If all of the earlier inspection items are normal, the remaining fault area is the EVAP leak check module.

Separate verification and takeaway

Keep the final confirmation separate from the fault isolation tests. The diagnostic logic here is simple: command purge, confirm the low-flow fault, then work through the purge valve, purge plumbing, ELCM path, filler flap sealing, fuel tank system, canister, and finally the EVAP leak check module if everything else tests normal.
