Key on, vehicle in service mode, look at the scan tool engine oil pressure parameter. It should read 0 kPa (0 PSI). If it does not, go straight into the electrical testing path. If it does show 0 kPa (0 PSI), record the engine oil pressure observed during the oil pressure test, and confirm the engine has the correct oil level and correct oil pressure before going any farther.
Compare measured pressure, scan data, and the cluster
Now run the engine and compare the scan tool engine oil pressure, or engine oil pressure sensor parameter, to the pressure you observed during the oil pressure test. Those two need to match. If they do not match, move into circuit testing. If they do match, and the truck is equipped with the P16 instrument cluster oil pressure display, compare the cluster value to the scan tool parameter. If the cluster display does not match the scan data, test or replace the P16 instrument cluster. If the cluster and scan data match, this part of the path is OK.
Set up for circuit testing and check low reference
For circuit testing, turn the ignition and all vehicle systems off. Give the vehicle time to go fully to sleep; it may take up to 2 min before a ground or low reference continuity test is accurate. Disconnect the engine oil pressure sensor connector at the engine block. Test between low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground. You want less than 10 Ω. If it is 10 Ω or greater, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the engine control module and test the low reference circuit from terminal 2 at the component harness to the other end of the circuit. That test should be less than 2 Ω. If it is 2 Ω or greater, repair the open or high resistance in the circuit. If it is less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. If the original low reference-to-ground test is less than 10 Ω, turn the ignition on with the vehicle in service mode and continue to the 5 V Reference test.
Check the 5 V Reference circuit
With the ignition on and the vehicle in service mode, test between 5 V Reference circuit terminal 3 and low reference circuit terminal 2. The expected range is 4.8 to 5.2 V. If it is less than 4.8 V, turn the vehicle off, disconnect the engine control module connector, and test the 5 V Reference circuit at terminal 3 of the component harness to ground for infinite resistance. If it is less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground. If it is infinite resistance, test that same 5 V Reference circuit to the other end of the circuit for less than 2 Ω. If it is 2 Ω or greater, repair the open or high resistance. If it is less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. If the 5 V Reference is greater than 5.2 V, turn the vehicle off, disconnect the engine control module connector, turn the ignition back on in service mode, and test 5 V Reference terminal 3 at the component harness to ground. It should be less than 1 V. If it is 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage. If it is less than 1 V, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
Check the signal circuit baseline
If the 5 V Reference circuit is in the 4.8 to 5.2 V range, look at the scan tool engine oil pressure, or engine oil pressure sensor parameter, with the sensor disconnected. It should be 0 kPa (0 PSI). If it is greater than 0 kPa (0 PSI), turn the vehicle off, disconnect the engine control module connector, turn the ignition on in service mode, and test signal circuit terminal 1 at the component harness to ground. The test should show less than 1 V. If it is 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the signal circuit. If it is less than 1 V, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. If the scan parameter is 0 kPa (0 PSI) or less, move to the sensor signal simulation test.
Simulate the sensor signal and finish the circuit decision
Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between signal circuit terminal 1 and 5 V Reference circuit terminal 3. Now the scan tool engine oil pressure should read greater than 800 kPa (116 PSI). If it reads 800 kPa (116 PSI) or less, turn the vehicle off, remove the jumper, disconnect the engine control module connector, and test signal circuit terminal 1 at the component harness to ground for infinite resistance. If it is less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground. If it is infinite resistance, test the signal circuit from terminal 1 at the component harness to the other end of the circuit. That continuity test should be less than 2 Ω. If it is 2 Ω or greater, repair the open or high resistance in the signal circuit. If it is less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. If the jumpered signal makes the scan tool read greater than 800 kPa (116 PSI), test or replace the engine oil pressure sensor at the engine block.
