Verify the problem first
Start by duplicating the fault. Select ON mode with the engine start/stop button, clear the DTC with the HDS, and start the engine. Hold the brake, shift to R, wait for at least 1 second, then check Pending and Confirmed DTCs with the HDS. If P0974 comes back, the failure is duplicated and you move into circuit testing. If it does not come back, treat it as an intermittent condition. The system is OK at that moment, so concentrate on poor connections and loose terminals in the shift solenoid valve A circuit instead of guessing at parts.
Check the feed fuse
With the failure duplicated, turn the vehicle OFF and check fuse No. B8 (10 A) in the under-dash fuse/relay box. If the fuse is OK, keep going. If it is not OK, replace the No. B8 (10 A) fuse and recheck. If that fuse blows again, repair the short to body ground on the No. B8 (10 A) fuse circuit, then recheck.
Check the IG1 MISS SOL feed circuit
Next, check the IG1 MISS SOL side of the circuit. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, disconnect PCM connector A (51P), select ON mode, and measure voltage between PCM connector A (51P) No. 1, the LT BLU wire, and body ground. If you have battery voltage there, the IG1 MISS SOL wire is OK and you move on. If you do not have battery voltage, repair the open in the IG1 MISS SOL wire between the PCM and the No. B8 (10 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
Use the solenoid circuit response to split the path
Now separate a solenoid-side problem from the rest of the circuit. Turn the vehicle OFF, reconnect PCM connector A (51P), and disconnect the shift solenoid valve A 2P connector. Ground shift solenoid valve A 2P connector No. 1, the BLU wire, with a jumper wire. Select ON mode, clear the DTC with the HDS, start the engine in P, wait for at least 1 second, and check Pending or Confirmed DTCs again. If the companion solenoid circuit code is now indicated, continue with the solenoid ground-side check. If that companion code is not indicated, skip ahead to the SHA wire continuity check.
Check the PG ground path
For the ground-side check, turn the vehicle OFF, remove the jumper wire, and check continuity between shift solenoid valve A 2P connector No. 2, the BLK wire, and body ground. If there is continuity, the fault is in shift solenoid valve A, and the supported repair is to replace the secondary valve body, which includes shift solenoid valve A. If there is no continuity, shift solenoid valve A is OK. Repair the open in the PG wire between the PCM and body ground G101, or repair the poor body ground at G101.
Check the SHA control wire
If the earlier split pointed you toward the control wire, turn the vehicle OFF and remove the jumper wire. Jump the SCS line with the HDS, disconnect PCM connector B (51P), and check continuity between shift solenoid valve A 2P connector No. 1, the BLU wire, and PCM connector B (51P) No. 2, also the BLU wire. If continuity is present, the SHA wire is OK, and the supported repair is PCM replacement. If continuity is not present, repair the open in the SHA wire between shift solenoid valve A and the PCM.
Verify the repair
After any circuit repair or supported component replacement, keep verification separate from testing. Clear the code, repeat the same operating check, and confirm P0974 does not return as a Pending or Confirmed DTC.
