Diagnostic path
Set up the diagnostic path
On this 2018 to 2025 Accord Hybrid, P04F1 is an EVAP diagnostic. In plain language, the PCM may be looking for the expected EVAP pressure activity after shutdown, including purge-valve pulsation and a response from the ELCM pressure sensor. The customer may only notice a warning light, and the possible fault areas can include the purge valves, purge plumbing, the ELCM side of the system, the main flap and fuel tank sealing area, or the canister. Start with the basic system checks and follow a structured diagnostic approach before getting into the pinpoint tests.
Duplicate the fault first
Turn the vehicle to ON mode. Then use the HDS to run the EVAP Leak Check Module Test. If that test result is not OK, the failure has been duplicated, and you can move into the EVAP checks instead of guessing at parts.
Check the EVAP canister purge valves
Next is the EVAP canister purge valve inspection. Remove the EVAP canister purge valve and use a vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, to apply pressure to the specified port. For the open-stuck check, apply pressure to port B; the normal result is that pressure is held. Before doing the closed-stuck check, make sure that open-stuck result is within specification. For purge valve 1, connect the connector terminals to the 12 volt battery terminals with jumper wires, then apply pressure to port B. The normal result is that pressure is not held. Do the same closed-stuck inspection for purge valve 2, again only after confirming the open-stuck inspection is within specification. If these purge valve inspections are abnormal, the problem is in the EVAP canister purge valve area. Some of these hookups depend on exact port and jumper placement, so do not improvise the connection points; pause and confirm the correct layout before applying pressure or power.
Check the purge plumbing
After the purge valve checks, inspect EVAP purge system 1 for poor connection, blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. The normal condition is good connections with no blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. If that check is abnormal, the problem is in EVAP purge system 1. Then move to EVAP purge system 2. For the blockage check, disconnect the purge tube from the EVAP canister purge valve, disconnect the fuel purge pipe from the EVAP canister, connect a hose to the fuel purge pipe, and connect the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, to that hose. Apply pressure to the hose. Normal is that pressure is not held. If it is abnormal, the problem is in EVAP purge system 2. For the leakage check, first verify that the EVAP canister purge valve is normal. Then disconnect the fuel purge pipe from the EVAP canister, connect the hose and the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, and apply vacuum. Normal is that vacuum is held. If it is abnormal, the problem is in EVAP purge system 2.
Check the ELCM side, main flap, and fuel tank system
Next, inspect the ELCM system for poor connection, blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. Normal is good connections with no blockage, restriction, leakage, or damage. If that check is abnormal, the problem is in the ELCM system. Then inspect the main flap unit. Make sure the shut-off valve is closed, and check the flap seal and mating surface for missing or damaged seals. If that is abnormal, the problem is in the main flap unit. For the fuel tank leakage check, first verify that the main flap unit is normal. Then disconnect the fuel vent tube from the EVAP canister, connect a hose to the fuel vent tube, connect the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, and apply vacuum to the hose. Normal is that vacuum is held. If it is abnormal, the problem is in the fuel tank system.
Check the EVAP canister, then isolate the remaining cause
Now check the EVAP canister. For the leakage check, disconnect the drain tube, fuel vent tube, and fuel purge pipe from the canister, then plug the drain tube port and fuel vent tube port. Connect a hose to the fuel purge pipe port, connect the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, and apply vacuum. Normal is that vacuum is held. If it is abnormal, the problem is in the EVAP canister. For the blockage check, disconnect the drain tube, fuel vent tube, and fuel purge pipe from the canister, then plug the fuel vent tube port. Connect a hose to the drain tube port, connect the vacuum pump/gauge, 0-30 inHg, and apply pressure. Normal is that pressure is not held. If it is abnormal, the problem is in the EVAP canister. If all the other inspection items show normal condition, the remaining cause is the EVAP leak check module.
