Before getting deep into it, start with the basic system checks. Also, if another related throttle sensor correlation code is stored along with this one, diagnose that first, then come back and recheck P2176. One safety point: keep your fingers out of the installed throttle body any time the vehicle is in ON mode. If the throttle valve is commanded, it can seriously injure your fingers.
Verify the code first
Start by verifying the problem. Turn the vehicle to ON mode, clear the code with the HDS, then turn the vehicle to OFF, LOCK mode, and wait 10 seconds. Turn it back to ON mode and check for pending or confirmed codes with the HDS. If P2176 comes right back, the failure is duplicated and you move into throttle body testing. If it does not come back, treat it as intermittent for now. The system is OK at this moment, so check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, clean the throttle body, and if captured data is available, try to reproduce the same conditions that were present when the code set.
Check throttle valve movement
Next, check throttle body operation. Turn the vehicle to OFF, LOCK mode, disconnect the intake air duct from the throttle body, then turn the vehicle to ON mode. Clear the code with the HDS, and while running the ETCS test in the HDS inspection menu, visually watch the throttle valve. The decision here is simple: does the throttle valve move to its fully closed position? If it does, go on to inspect the throttle body condition. If it does not, move to the motor circuit continuity check.
Inspect for carbon or sludge
If the throttle valve did move fully closed, turn the vehicle to OFF, LOCK mode, remove the throttle body, and inspect the throttle valve for sludge or carbon. If sludge or carbon is present, clean the throttle body. If there is no sludge or carbon on the throttle valve, the diagnostic path calls for replacing the throttle body.
Check the MTR1 and MTR2 wires for an open
If the throttle valve did not move to the fully closed position, check the motor control wiring for an open on the MTR1 and MTR2 lines. Turn the vehicle to OFF, LOCK mode. Jump the SCS line with the HDS and wait more than 1 minute. Disconnect PCM connector C, 51P, and disconnect the throttle body 6P connector. At the throttle body 6P connector, jumper terminal No. 1 to terminal No. 2. Then check continuity between PCM connector C, 51P, terminal No. 11 and PCM connector C, 51P, terminal No. 12, with the vehicle still in OFF, LOCK mode and both connectors disconnected as set up. If there is no continuity, repair the open in the MTR1 wire and/or the MTR2 wire between PCM terminals C11 and C12 and the throttle body.
If the motor wires test good
If that continuity check passes, the MTR1 and MTR2 wires are OK. At that point, update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If P2176 goes away after the PCM update, troubleshooting is complete. If P2176 goes away with a known-good PCM substituted, replace the original PCM.
Verify the repair
Keep verification separate from the testing steps. After the correction is made, verify the repair and confirm P2176 stays gone under the conditions you were using to duplicate the fault.
