The truck may have a MIL, may run rough, may hesitate, may lose fuel economy, and stop/start can be disabled while the fault is active. Think broad at the start: possible unmetered air, vacuum leaks, fuel delivery, fuel quality, MAP input, exhaust leakage, O2 sensor wiring, connector issues, or an engine mechanical problem. Start with the basic system checks before you chase the code path.

Understand when the monitor runs and what makes it fail

For the monitor gate, keep the operating conditions on screen instead of turning them into a long checklist. The diagnostic runs continuously with the engine running in closed loop fuel control, battery voltage above 11.0 volts, barometric pressure greater than 75 kPa, ambient temperature above -7°C (20°F), fuel level greater than 12%, and altitude below 2590.8 m (8500 ft.). The fuel trim decision is based on the sum of short term and long term fuel corrections. When that sum is greater than a calibrated threshold, generally 133% with 100% nominal, the fail timer increments. After approximately 30 seconds of fail time, the diagnostic fails. This is an emissions-related monitor, tied to emissions exceeding 1.5 times any of the standards.

Confirm the fault before testing parts

First, scan every ECU, record the DTCs, and save the scan report with the related data. Clear the DTCs, turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds, then turn it back on. Now operate the vehicle under the conditions that set the fault, using the captured data and the monitor conditions as your guide. Read the DTCs again. If P0174 comes back, continue down this path. If it does not come back, treat it as an intermittent condition and do not force a parts call.

Check for higher-priority fuel and air handling faults

Next, look at the DTCs you recorded. If there are active or pending fuel system or air handling faults, diagnose those first. This lean fault can be caused by an O2 sensor or wiring problem, but on this path it is more likely to come from a mechanical, fuel, or air handling issue. If the vehicle has fuel system symptoms, driveability complaints, or other fuel or air handling faults, handle those before continuing with this P0174 routine.

Work through the supporting system checks in order

If there are no active or pending fuel or air handling faults to handle first, check MAP sensor operation. If that test finds a problem, make the appropriate repair and verify the repair. If MAP operation checks out, move to the fuel delivery system check. If fuel delivery has a problem, repair it and verify. If fuel delivery checks out, check the ethanol content in the fuel. If the gasoline has an issue, correct that and verify. When you hit one of these named routines, stop, run that routine completely, and come back only after it gives you a result. Do not invent test values or shortcuts.

Check the mechanical and air leak side before blaming the sensor

If MAP operation, fuel delivery, and fuel quality do not show the problem, turn the ignition off and check the mechanical side. The air induction system needs to be leak-free. Check the whole engine and the vacuum hoses and lines for vacuum leaks. Check the power brake booster for an internal vacuum leak by watching engine speed and vacuum while pinching the booster vacuum hose. If a fuel injector is suspected of being plugged or restricted, remove the fuel rail with the injectors still installed, energize the fuel pump to keep pressure in the rail, actuate the suspect injector with the scan tool, inspect the spray pattern, and compare it with the others. Also check that the purge flow system flows freely with no leaks or restrictions, including the hose and connections between the purge solenoid and intake manifold. Engine compression must be within specifications. If any of these checks find a mechanical problem, repair it and verify the repair. If not, move on to the exhaust leak check.

Check for exhaust leakage

Next, check the exhaust system for leaks using the exhaust leak test routine. If it finds a problem, repair it and verify the repair. If the exhaust system checks out, then it makes sense to move into the bank 2 upstream oxygen sensor circuit checks.

Test the 2/1 upstream O2 sensor wiring correctly

Before probing anything near the PCM, slow down. Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing those terminals can damage them and create a poor terminal-to-pin connection. Use the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor for this diagnosis. Disconnect the upstream O2 sensor harness connector and the PCM C2 harness connector, then connect Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic 10436. Check the upstream O2 sensor circuits between the O2 sensor connector and the PCM C2 connector for a short to ground, and for an open or high resistance. If the wiring has a problem, repair it and verify the repair. If the wiring checks good, continue to the sensor retest step.

Replace the bank 2 upstream O2 sensor only after the earlier checks pass

At this point in the path, replace the bank 2 upstream O2 sensor and retest. Connect the bank 2 upstream O2 sensor and PCM harness connectors, turn the ignition on, clear the DTCs, and operate the vehicle under the captured conditions or the monitor conditions that set the fault. If P0174 does not return, the bank 2 upstream O2 sensor repair fixed the fault, and you still need to verify the repair. If P0174 returns, continue to connector and harness connection checks.

Inspect related connections before making a PCM call

If the code returns after the bank 2 upstream O2 sensor has been replaced and retested, inspect the related harness connections. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors, any related in-line connectors if equipped, and the related component connectors. Look for poor connector installation, damaged locks, corrosion, signs of water intrusion, weather seal damage if equipped, bent terminals, overheated or discolored terminals, and terminals pushed back in the cavity. Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension. Repair any conditions found. Then reconnect the PCM, in-line, and component connectors, making sure every connector is fully seated and every lock is fully engaged. Clear the DTCs, test drive or operate the vehicle under the monitor and set conditions, and read DTCs again. If P0174 does not return, the wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired. If it does return after these checks, replace and program the PCM, then verify the repair.
