Initial checks and fuel level gate

Start with the basic system checks. Key on, get into the PCM data, and look at the FLI PID. Make sure it is greater than 15%. Add fuel if needed. Also look at the captured conditions before clearing anything. If the fuel level was below 15% when the code set, P0087 may set with no other concern present. Once P0087 is confirmed and the fuel level check is valid, this diagnostic path moves into low-pressure fuel supply testing first.

Check low-pressure supply with the engine running

With the ignition off, relieve fuel pressure, connect a mechanical fuel pressure gauge, then key on and pressurize the system. Start the engine and watch the mechanical gauge. The low-pressure fuel system needs to be greater than 310 kPa (45 psi). If it is not greater than 310 kPa (45 psi), stop this P0087 high-pressure path and diagnose the low-pressure fuel system before going farther. If pressure is greater than 310 kPa (45 psi), keep going.

Compare sensor data to the mechanical gauge

Next, check whether the scan data agrees with the gauge. With pressure relieved and the fuel pump disabled, key on and compare the FLP PID to the mechanical gauge. Then pressurize the system again, start the engine, let pressure stabilize, turn the ignition off, then key back on and compare the FLP PID to the gauge again. The FLP PID values need to be within 153 kPa (22 psi) of the mechanical gauge readings. If they are within 153 kPa (22 psi), move on. If they are not, install a new Fuel Pressure Sensor, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test.

Check low-pressure leakdown

Now check for low-pressure leakdown. Relieve fuel pressure, connect the mechanical gauge, key on, and pressurize the system. Cycle the ignition several times to charge the fuel system, then turn the ignition off and wait 15 minutes. After that wait, the low-pressure fuel system pressure should still be greater than 310 kPa (45 psi). If it is not, stop here and diagnose the low-pressure fuel system. If it is greater than 310 kPa (45 psi), continue into the pump and control circuit checks.

Check fuel injection pump resistance

With the ignition off, disconnect the fuel injection pump connector. On the 5.0L 32V Ti-VCT, measure resistance at the pump side between C1723 Pin 2 and C1723 Pin 1. The resistance should be between 0.3 Ω - 3.1 Ω. If it is in that range, keep testing the control circuits. If it is outside that range, install a new Fuel Injection Pump, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. Do not apply battery voltage across the fuel injection pump circuits; that can damage the fuel volume regulator solenoid.

Check the FVR and FVRRTN circuits for an open

Next, disconnect the PCM connector and check the FVR and FVRRTN circuits for an open. On the 5.0L 32V Ti-VCT, measure between C1381E Pin 1 and C1723 Pin 2, then between C1381E Pin 22 and C1723 Pin 1. Resistance should be less than 5 Ω. If it is not less than 5 Ω, repair the open circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If both circuits are less than 5 Ω, the P0087 path moves to the fuel injection pump operation check.

Shared circuit-short checks

In the shared high-pressure fuel system circuit checks, the next checks look for the FVR and FVRRTN circuits shorted where they should not be. For the short-to-ground check, use the listed pump connector measurement points, C1723 Pin 2 and C1723 Pin 1, and the resistance needs to be greater than 10000 Ω. If it is not greater than 10000 Ω, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. Then check whether the FVR and FVRRTN circuits are shorted together by measuring between C1723 Pin 2 and C1723 Pin 1. That resistance also needs to be greater than 10000 Ω. If it is not, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test.

Check FVRRTN for voltage

The next shared circuit check is for the FVRRTN circuit shorted to voltage. Key on, and on the 5.0L 32V Ti-VCT, check the listed voltage point at C1723 Pin 1. If any voltage is present, repair the short circuit, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If the meter hookup is not clear at this point, pause and recheck the earlier diagnostic path instead of guessing.

Check pump operation and connector condition

For the pump operation check, disconnect the fuel injection pump connector and inspect it closely for pushed out pins and corrosion. Reconnect the fuel injection pump connector, key on, start the engine, and wait 15 seconds. Then run the PCM self-test. If P0087 is present again, check the direct injection fuel injectors for external fuel leaks or damage, repair as necessary, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test. If P0087 does not return, the system is operating correctly at this time, and the concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

Cold-start branch used by related high-pressure concerns

Some related high-pressure fuel concerns use a cold-start confirmation after the pump operation check. For that branch, let the engine cold soak long enough for the engine coolant temperature to drop below 37.8°C (100°F). Start the engine and allow the engine to idle for 6 minutes, then run the PCM self-test. If that cold-start concern is present, continue into the connector and operation check. If it is not present, the test is complete, no concerns are present, clear the PCM DTCs, and repeat the self-test.

Connector reseat and correct operation check

For the correct operation check, disconnect all PCM connectors and disconnect the fuel injection pump connector. Inspect for pushed out pins and corrosion. Reconnect all PCM connectors and the fuel injection pump connector, and make sure they seat correctly. Key on and verify whether the concern is still present. If it is gone, the system is operating correctly at this time, and the concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. If it is still present, follow the remaining fault path without skipping ahead.

PCM operation check

If the diagnostic path reaches the PCM operation check, disconnect all PCM connectors, inspect for pushed out pins and corrosion, then reconnect all PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Reset the keep alive memory, then verify whether the concern is still present. If it is still present at that point, install a new Powertrain Control Module. If the concern is gone, the system is operating correctly at this time, and the issue may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
